So, Erin and I sat on the jetty waiting for the ferry back from Fraser Island to the mainland and watched the clouds roll in. As we boarded the ferry it started to rain. Now I don't know if I mentioned that when we were at the lake, Erin had refused to get in the lake - she didn't want to get wet - aaaaahhhhhhhh!! So it's raining but we decided to sit on the top deck in the open air and watch the storm behind us.
So we sat and laughed and generally recounted our fantastic day and the highlights of the trip. As we did, the rain came on harder, and Erin, poor Erin!, started to get wet. In fact, wetter than she would have been if she had swum in the lake!! I was pretty wet too but had my back to the rain so at least my face was dry!
It got harder and harder, and the then the thunder and lightening started. When we had sat down we vowed that no matter how wet we got we wouldn't move from the top deck! What a mistake! We were soaking wet by now and then the crew came and asked the remaining 20 or so passengers on the top deck to move to the front in the tiny protected covered bit. And I mean tiny. The boat was rocking from side to side and then it started.........
What started I hear you say? The Hail! The rain and hail were just coming at us from all angles. The boat was rocking all over the place, pitching from front to back just hitting the waves - and they weren't just little waves either. By now the sky was pitch black and the lightening show was amazing - just a shame we were too petrified to watch.
Picture the scariest ever Theme Park ride you have been on, and then imagine that, 3 times as bad and not being able to get off in a minute or so!! In fact, it was like there was no end to the terror.
So Erin is sat down with some random persons towel around her (cos her towel was already drenched) and I was stood clinging on for dear life. A very nice couple gave me a towel to put round me which kind of helped a little bit. Fear set in and then stayed when the crew told us that we weren't able to go into the harbour because it was too dangerous so we would have to stay in the shipping channel until it calmed down.
Oh My God - all I wanted to do was be on dry land. So we were out there in the storm for another half hour before we could go into the harbour.
Eventually, when I was contemplating somehow trying to find my mobile and phone important people to tell them I loved them and say goodbye, the crew announced that we could finally attempt to go into harbour. The relief - I can't describe!
So we stepped onto dry land and made our way onto the coach back to the hostel, where I proceeded to smoke and drink way too much!!
All in all, an absolutely fantastic day, with a real tale to recall and laugh about!!
xx
Yep, I've had that top deck experience - worth it!
